AMPHORAE FROM EXCAVATIONS AT SILCHESTER 1979 -1987.

Author(s): D F Williams

An examination of over 1250 sherds of amphorae resulted in the identification of the following types: Dressel 1B, Dressel 1sp., Dressel 2-4, Dressel 1 - Pascual 1, Catalan, Dressel 20, Camulodunum 185A, Camulodunum 186sp., Southern Spanish, Peacock and Williams Class 16, Gallic, Carrot type, Rhodian style, Richborough 527 and North African. Of particular interest were the variety of pre-Conquest forms present, clearly showing the range of luxury Mediterranean food-stuffs that were imported into southern Britain by the late Iron Age tribes.
