Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from the Roof of the 'Red Wing', Croome Court, Croome D'Abitot, Near Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton

Core samples were obtained from 16 different oak timbers in the roof of the 'Red Wing' at Croome Court, Worcestershire. The analysis of these produced a single site chronology, CRMASQ01, comprising 13 samples, and having a combined overall length of 115 rings. This site chronology was dated as spanning the years AD 1639 to AD 1753. Interpretation of the sapwood would indicate that all the dated timbers, from both ranges of the roof of the 'Red Wing', were cut in a single phase of felling in AD 1753. Such a date would indicate that the roof of the 'Red Wing' and the main house are broadly contemporary. No earlier or later material is detected amongst the sampled material.
