THE TREE-RING DATING OF THE CHURCH OF ST CUTHBERT, CLUNGUNFORD, SHROPSHIRE
Author(s): Daniel Miles, Michael Worthington
Fourteen timbers were sampled at the Church of St Cuthbert, Clungunford, Shropshire, seven from the nave, six from the chancel, and one from the north vestry chapel. Ten samples from the nave and chancel were combined to form the 219-ring site master STCTHBRT that dated, spanning the years AD 1120-1338. Two rafters from the chancel were found to have originated from the same tree which was felled during the winter of AD 1328/9, and an arch-brace from the nave was found to have been felled during the winter of AD 1338/9. This, together with some weathering of the westernmost rafter couple of the chancel suggests the nave post-dates the chancel. Both roofs are double arch-braced waggon roofs. A single sample from the north vestry chapel dated, spanning the years AD 1376-1487. A detached section of sapwood from this with minimal ring loss allowed a narrow felling date range of AD 1513-17 to be given for this timber.
