DOWN HOUSE, BROMLEY (INTERIM REPORT No.4): Notes on the Inventory Made Following the Death of Charles Darwin, in 1882, and How it Relates to the House Today

Author(s): Richard Lea

The following report follows the tour of the house as described in the inventory and presumably taken by Mr Banting in his evaluation of the contents of the property. The suggested interpretation appears to fit most of the evidence. However, there remains a few anomalies and hence, uncertainties. The interpretation is therefore still tentative and is offered only as scheme which can be tested through further analysis. The room numbering system adopted in this report is that currently used by the architects Donald Insall and Assocs. I have not included the lists of books, linen and clothing which appear to have been distributed about the house.
