The Barn, Butts Bank House, Broadwas, Worcestershire : Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge

A total of seven timbers dated from this cruck longhouse, four from ex situ timbers from the solar of the original long house, dismantled a few decades ago, and three from the extant barn, representing the lower end of the original longhouse. All seven appear likely to have been felled at the same time. One retained complete sapwood and was felled in spring AD 1496, making the most likely construction date for the longhouse AD 1496, or within one or two years after this date. A floor insertion and possible westward extension could not be dated, as timbers with sufficient numbers of rings were not present.
