An Assessment of the East Coast Martello Towers

Author(s): Jonathan Millward

This report presents a desk top assessment supported by limited fieldwork of the east coast Martello Towers in Essex and Suffolk. It outlines the historical context for this group of towers and discusses the individual towers with particular emphasis on their preservation and any threats which they face. It is shown that a number of the sites are threatened by coastal erosion while others are derelict. The report has also demonstrated that at a number of sites believed to have been lost that there are significant archaeological remains.
