TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF WATTLING FROM THE MILL POND (SITE 30) AND GRAVEYARD (SITE 71), WHARRAM PERCY, N YORKSHIRE.
Author(s): R A Morgan
A series of wattle and post alignments, probably helping to revet the mill pond (site 30) and dating to around the 12th century, were sampled for tree-ring study, in addition to a length of wattle from the graveyard (site 71). The principal woods used were oak, hazel and willow. The variety of species gave some indication of the composition and character of the surrounding woodland. The size ranges of 25-40mm for the small posts and 15-25mm for the rods were much more uniform than the age ranges; other than a small concentration of 7-8 year old stems, these were wide. No relative dating was possible using the tree-ring record of the large posts. Comparisons are also drawn with evidence from other early examples of wattle.
