Botanical Survey of Some English Heritage Properties in the North East Region

Author(s): Rosemary FitzGerald

This rather barei exposed site was visited in the drought of 1995, so vegetation was in moderate condition, but no evidence was found of interesting communities which might appear in easier weather conditions. Most of the grass within the walls is close-mown lawn, and the rougher areas (moat banks and the 'field' compartment along the S boundary) showed definite signs of disturbance and were generally dominated by rank and weedy species. Species found on grass banks (including those outside the walls) are listed together under 7.3.1, as no significant differences were found between the various areas. Likewise species from walls and wall bases are listed with those from the outer rock ledges under 7,3.2. The moat banks were seen just before one of their now infrequent mowings, so in spite of the drought, the majority of species must have been visible.
