THE HUMAN BONES FROM ANCASTER

Author(s): M Cox

Two hundred and eighty two skeletons were excavated from the Roman cemetery at Ancaster. However, the post excavation history of the collection has increased the sample to 327 skeletons. Of these 243 are adults and 84 juveniles. The sex ratio of the adults was 2:3 females to males most of which died in the middle-aged category. The juveniles and infants were mainly buried in groups. Of this group 29% were perinatal infants, the second largest group being aged from 3 to 4 years which might reflect the age of weaning. The stature of the males was 169cm and the females were 157cm tall, the nutritional status of the sample appears to have been good as does their general health apart from joint disease and dental caries.
