A NOTE ON THE PETROLOGY OF SOME SAXON DAUB FROM THREE SITES IN LONDON: MAIDEN LANE, JUBILEE HALL AND BEDFORDBURY.

Author(s): D F Williams

A small group of samples of daub from the Saxon sites of Maiden Lane, Jubilee Hall and Bedfordbury were examined in thin section and compared with a sample of local brickearth. The results allowed the daub to be divided into two divisions: a finer-textured group with added vegetable tempering, and one with a more coarser-textured fabric. Both of these groups compared well with the local brickearth in the range of non-plastic inclusions present, and in all probability this was the source of the clay used for the daub.
