THE VERTEBRATE REMAINS FROM WHARRAM PERCY NORTH MANOR BOUNDARY EAST - SITE 39, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Author(s): P M Stevens

A total of 3043 bone fragments were examined from six groups. The material dated from the Saxon to the post- Medieval periods, the bulk coming from group 6, the Saxon Grubenhaus fill. Analysis of the bone included condition, species identification, age determination, gnawing, butchery and pathology. The analysis showed that cattle (Bos sp.) and sheep/goat(Ovicaprid sp.) were the most important species present (8% and 7% respectively) with pig (Sus sp.) representing only 2% of the total. Other species present were horse (Equus sp.), dog (Canis sp.), domestic fowl (Gallus sp. domestic), bird bones which are probably also domestic fowl, domestic goose (Anas sp. domestic), and several bones of water vole, (Arvicola terrestris) probably indicating one specimen, all representing less than 1% each of the total bones from the site. For the purposes of this report only Group 6 has been totally analysed, the remaining five groups are made up from 17 contexts, none producing more than 64 bone fragments.
