Collection: Allied Breweries Slides

Description

A collection of circa 6000 colour 35mm slides assembled by Allied Breweries between circa 1960-1990. The slides relate to pub and food outlets held by the Allied Breweries group. Allied Breweries was the result of a 1961 merger between Ind Coope, Ansells and Tetley Walker. In 1978 Allied Breweries merged with the food group J Lyons and Co. to form Allied Lyons (later Allied Domecq, now part of Pernod Ricard). There is good coverage of the English regions as well as limited foreign material including Ireland, Belgium and Holland. The collection includes interior and exterior views and promotional material. The collection can be divided into three groupings: • Exterior views - pubs (ABS01/01): Before and after views feature prominently, recording external redecoration/renovation. There are also night shots to highlight illuminated pub signage. Some of the external photography was taken for the ‘Allied Exterior Contests’ 1967-1972. There are a small number of slides showing non-Allied Breweries public houses. Good thematic record of pubs across the English regions. Probably taken late 1960s/early 1970s.

•Interior views (ABS01/02): The slides show interiors of pubs and eateries, with and without people. Probably taken late 1960s/early 1970s.

•Promotional material: Slides relating to the food and catering elements of the Allied Breweries group (Allied Lyons). Most, if not all, appear to have been produced for promotional purposes for brands such as Firkin, Big Steak, Exchange Diner, Dunkin Donut, Baskin Robbins and Punch Taverns. As well as company logos, this group features people eating and drinking. Most images appear to be staged. Probably taken 1980s/1990s.

Archival History

Acquired via Nigel Clubb, June 2003. The collection is split into boxes of slides which have reference numbers related to a card index and a set of slide albums for which there is also an index list.
