Description

The collection comprises a photographically illustrated printed book entitled 'A Description of the Hundred of Salford Assize Courts. Illustrated'. The Assize Courts building (now demolished) was completed in 1864 and located in Great Ducie Street, Manchester to the designs of Alfred Waterhouse who also the architect of nearby Strangeways Prison.

The volume is undated but references in the text indicate that it was published in or after 1869 by Beresford and Havill of Manchester. It contains detailed architectural descriptions of the Assize Courts and Strangeways prison. It contains one folded plan and eight black and white photographs showing exteriors and interiors of the Assize Courts, and one black and white photograph showing the exterior of the prison.

The collection was acquired by the NMR in 2011.
