A collection of circa 2800 slides and 2 glass plate negatives, taken or collected by Thomas William Marsden Anderson between circa 1952 and 1999. The glass negatives, both taken in 1952, depict the ambulatory, Norwich Cathedral (Thornton Ackard camera), and the Tomb of Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey (Sanderson camera).
The collection reflects the photographer’s interest in ecclesiastical architecture and archaeology. Ecclesiastical architecture features strongly but the collection also includes country houses, street scenes, excavations and urban landscapes. The excavation sites include: Little London 1979, Baynards Castle and Billingsgate. Coverage is national but is heavily concentrated on Essex, East Anglia and the south east. Coverage of the Midlands and north of England is sparse, with the exception of Yorkshire and the north east. The south-west of England receives some limited coverage. The collection's strength is in recording historic buildings in and around Woodford and Waltham Abbey, Essex. A handlist of the slides is available.
T W M Anderson was a fire surveyor for Municipal Mutual Insurance who lived at Woodford Wells, Essex. He was a member of the London Topographical Society, the Royal Archaeological Institute, London & Middlesex Archaeological Society, and the Woodford Photographic Society. He was an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a local historian. It is not certain that he is the creator of this collection.
The collection was given to the NMR in 2007.
