The C H Bear collection consists of 1271 small format black and white negatives, and forty-one black and white prints, dating from the mid 20th century. The collection was received by the National Buildings Record in the 1970s, but little is known of its provenance or the background of the photographer.
The negatives are wide-ranging in scope, both subject matter and location. A small proportion (around 250 images) have been identified and include the photographer's original number, some with handwritten lists. While a significant proportion focus on ecclesiastical subjects, the negatives also include landscape and seascape views, vernacular architecture, street scenes, and country houses.
The prints focus mainly on ecclesiastical subjects, the majority of which are unidentified. A handwritten note found within the collection suggests that the churches depicted are mainly in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, and that C H Bear was collecting examples of vaulted porches.
