Description

A letter to Sir Mortimer Wheeler attempting to enlist his support in convincing Chester City Council of the importance of the amphitheatre in order to prevent a road being built across it. With a conjectured plan, sketches of the excavated remains and notes on the preliminary report of trial excavations by Professor Newstead, sent with the letter as supporting information.

All the items were produced by PH Lawson, honorary secretary of The Chester and North Wales Architectural, Archaeological and Historic Society. There is also a photographic copy of the sketches The excavations were carried out after the discovery of walling during building work on the Ursuline Convent, west of St. John's Church, in 1929 by Professor Newstead (see "Deva Roman Chester", Thompson, F.H., 1959, Plate XV; "Roman Cheshire", Thompson, F.H., 1965, Plate 28). The area was not properly excavated until 1960.
