A collection comprising the results of a life-time's involvement in archaeology. The archive, spanning 50 years, consists of original and copied material, much of it of primary importance. Miss Chitty's research interests were rooted firmly in prehistoric archaeology, and particularly in artefact studies. She concentrated on British archaeology but her work was influenced by research in Europe. She had a special interest in her home county of Shropshire. This archive is held by the Records and Research Unit, Castle Gate Library, Shrewsbury. The NMR archive includes an extensive collection of correspondence with notable archaeologists, e.g. R.E.M. Wheeler, D. Dudley, H. St. George Gray, B. O'Neil, C.F.C. Hawkes, K.M. Kenyon, E.C. Curwen and G.E. Daniel. The collection also includes over 200 original distribution maps, many prepared for an unrealised book on the prehistory of Britain in collaboration with Sir Cyril Fox, used in "The Personality of Britain". It also includes a collection of books and pamphlets from her library. (8 distribution maps have been received conservation treatment - March 1996).
