Description

A collection of thirty-two negatives showing architectural details in Worcester Cathedral and St Peter's Church, Northampton. The provenance, style and date suggests that the photographs were taken by John W Cruickshank circa 1905, and are part of a much larger body of work focussing largely on European architecture, which is held at the Courtauld Institute and the British School at Rome.

Cruickshank (1852-1918) was born in Aberdeen. After his retirement he relocated to Haslemere in Surrey, but moved permanently to Florence in 1912. Cruickshank was interested in church architecture and sculpture, particularly symbolism, and he photographed extensively throughout Europe. With his wife he wrote and illustrated several guidebooks on Tuscany and Umbria. He died in 1918.
