Description

This collection contains 462 photographs and 109 photocopies of photographs depicting industrial and commercial buildings, primarily in London. Only two of the 33 packets contain a handful of non-London material (Lever Soap Works Port Sunlight, Cheshire; Shepperton Railway Station, Surrey and Birmingham Jewellery Quarter). The images are accompanied by Centre for British Archaeology Industrial Archaeology index cards. David Thomas was the former Recording Group Secretary of the Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society [GLIAS].

The images show a wide range of building types and include shops and restaurants as well as typically industrial buildings and workshops. They are a useful record of the condition and use of London's commercial buildings in 1978 and 1979 and include update notes up to 2006. The images are primarily exteriors and all are black and white.

Each CBA card records the following details: Nature of site (factory, mine, etc.), county (almost exclusively 'GLC' in this collection), Reference number (not used in this collection), Grid reference or location (usually street name and postcode or grid reference), Industry (rarely used), Dating (date when building was erected), Parish/township (usually London borough in this collection), Date of report (dates of updates to card are often added to original date), Description (position of photograph, name of building, any distinguishing features, any updates), Machinery and fittings, Danger of demolition or damage, Printed manuscript or photographic records, Reporters name and address, Institution or Society of the reporter (usually GLIAS), and Return to (usually blank).

A handlist is attached.
