A collection of photographic negatives and prints, taken by Edward John Bedford, in the first half of the twentieth century. Bedford was a professional photographer based in Lewes, East Sussex, and a significant proportion of the collection covers locations in and around the town. Some of the later photographs were taken for the National Buildings Record, and a handwritten list of these is kept in the collection file.
The collection comprises 528 negatives, a mixture of glass plate and film, and approximately 80 small format prints, which were derived from the negatives. Subjects covered include: East and West Sussex churches, Herstmonceaux Castle, Bodiam Castle, Chichester Market Cross, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, Lewes Castle, historic buildings including mills in East Sussex, Rye and Newhaven Harbours, street scenes around Lewes, and landscape and river views around the River Ouse in Norfolk. There are also several images showing the Proclamation of King George VI at the Town Hall in Lewes, and a set of prints showing a football match.
Received Via : Sussex Archeological Society (et al ) Provenance : Photographer operating from 1900s - 1940s, contributing to the NBR from 1940s onwards. Some of this material is held in RCHME Negatives Bedford material held in Boxes 149, 206, and 214 of the County Backlog.
