Description

The collection contains a photographically illustrated book entitled 'Kingsbridge Estuary with Rambles in the Neighbourhood' compiled by Sarah Prideaux Fox (London: Hamilton Adams & Co., 1864).

The book is a topographical account of the Kingsbridge estuary and surrounding area and is illustrated with 26 black and white real photographs which were The images depict: start lighthouse, Kingsbridge from the estuary, Kingsbridge from Knowle Hill, Crispin's Free Grammar School from a watercolour painting, Vine House from a watercolour painting, Combe Royal front view, Combe Royal side view, Langwell old gateway, The Rectory Dodbrooke, Part of Salcombe, Salcombe district church, Fort Charles Salcombe, The Moult Salcombe, The Bolt Head, Hope, Thulestone Dock, Leigh, Bearscombe, Fallapitt, Kenedon, Widdicombe, Torcross, Torcross and the Lea, Slapton church and Old Tower Slapton.

Archival History

The book was acquired by the NMR in 1988.

Sarah Prideaux Fox compiled the book in 1864. The photographs were take by her brother but unfortunately his name does not appear in the book. She dedicated the book to her relative Charles Prideaux, FLS. Published by G P Friend in Kingsbridge and Hamilton, Adams & Co. in London.The book was formerly held by the NMR library.
