Description

The collection comprises 281 35mm colour slides, dating from 1953-1961, taken by Frederick Stanley Scott, an amateur photographer.

Scott was born in Warminster, Wiltshire on 14th January 1901. The family moved to Bristol when he was five years old, and he remained based in Bristol for most of his life. He trained first as an electrician and plumber, and later took a course in building construction at Bristol Technical College, following which he started his own building business in Westbury Park. He later took over premises in Redland. During the Second World War he was conscripted to a munitions factory at Filton, and was later maintenance manager at Clifton College. In the 1950s he developed hobbies in stamp collecting, becoming president of the Bristol and Clifton Philatelic Society in the 1960s, and in colour photography. His photography was not limited to Bristol, but covered much of the country, recording historic buildings, scenery, and events.

Scott's photographs of Bristol have been deposited with the Bristol Record Office. The remainder, held by the Historic England Archive, were donated by his daughter. Locations covered include: Lincoln, York, Coventry, Warwick, Stratford on Avon, Cambridge, Chester, Banbury, Exeter, Canterbury, St Albans, Oxford, London, Arundel, Malvern, Stonehenge, Ledbury, Bridgnorth, Chichester, Dartmouth, Exmouth, the Scilly Isles, Dartmoor, Norfolk, Newlyn, Newquay, Torquay, Exmoor, Weymouth and Lechlade. In addition there are a small number of images depicting sites in Wales and Scotland. Other subjects include: Whipsnade Zoo, Slimbridge Wetland Centre, the Runcorn Transporter Bridge, and the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
