Description

The collection comprises 124 negatives, contact prints and material relating to Shad Thames pumping station, Maguire Street, Bermondsey. The photographs were taken by members of the Greater London Industrial Archaeological Society (GLIAS) during a visit to the pumping station in 1980. Some were used to illustrate a GLIAS report about the site. A photocopy of this report (supplement to GLIAS Newsletter 71 – Dec 1980) forms part of the collection.

Shad Thames pumping station was constructed 1907-1909 and was built to pump excess storm sewage into the Thames. It was of particular interest to GLIAS in retaining its original gas engines. At the time of the survey in 1980, plans were already well advanced to replace the main engines and pumps with modern automatically operated equipment.
