Description

The collection contains original correspondence compiled by General Pitt-Rivers (1827-1900) relating to the Ancient Monuments Act 1882. Pitt-Rivers was the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments responsible for acquiring and surveying ancient monuments on behalf of the Office of Works.

The collection is arranged into thirty-six folders organised by monument site or subject and a handlist is available.

English sites include: Silchester; "Rollrich" Stones (Ie: Rollright Stones); Cup Marker Stones, Rombalds's Moor Nr Ilkley; Stonehenge; Uleybury Tumulus, Glos [Hetty Peglers Tump]; Nine Stones, Winterbourne Abbas [Winterbourne Poor Lot Barrows?]; Wroxeter [Uriconium]; Jewry Wall, Leicester; Hugill Village, Nr Ings, Westmoreland; Old Sarum, Wilts [containing material relating to Avebury and West Kennet Long Barrow]; Roman Camp At Uphall Farm, Ilford, Ex [Incl Corresp Relating To The Effect Of The Pewsey & Salisbury Light Railway On Salisbury Plain]; Various Sites In Cumberland.

Welsh sites include: Longhouse Cromlech, Llanrian, Pembrokeshire; Llantwit Crosses; Margam Crosses.

Scottish sites include: Ruthwell Cross; Lundin Stones, Montrave; Dyce Stones; Maiden Castle, Fife; Stones at St Andrew’s Cathedral; Wall of Antoninus, Rough Castle, Castle Cary; Glamis Cross, Forfar; Eassie Cross, Forfar; Whithorn Priory and Crosses.

There are also folders relating to: SPAB; Kent; Office of Works reports compiled by Pitt-Rivers; estimates of expenditure 1884-91; appointment of inspector; The National Trust including its articles of association and an invitation to its inaugural meeting; establishment of local committees in Newcastle and Kent; Committee of Aid; and an index to references to Ancient Monuments in Great Britain.

Archival History

The English Heritage Archive acquired the collection in 2013.
