Description
A collection of twenty-three black and white photographic prints, taken for the Great Western Railway Engineers Office, and dating from 1920-1935. The majority of the images show the Tregenna Castle Hotel, a GWR hotel. The collection of prints includes interior and exterior views of the Tregenna Castle Hotel, alongside two exteriors and an interior view of the Fishguard Bay Hotel in Wales, a view of the golf course at the Manor House Hotel, and an exterior view of the Great Western Royal Hotel at Paddington Station.
Tregenna Castle originally dates from 1774 when it was built as a private home. It was sold to a local family of bankers, the Bolithos, in 1871, before being leased to the GWR in 1878, and subsequently sold to the GWR in 1895. The hotel served as a seaside 'destination' hotel for passengers on the Great Western Railway, and the building was extended to include a restaurant, function rooms, and more. Further development took place in the early 1900s, with the completion of the West Wing in 1932. Following the nationalisation of the Great Western Railway Company in 1948 the management of the hotel passed to different owners.
