The collection contains original records of stained glass artist George Daniels (1854-1940) and research papers relating to his life and work compiled by his grand-daughter, Muriel Simpson.
The collection comprises: 8 notebooks compiled by Daniels' recording financial accounts and summary details of his commissions, 1883-1939; transcripts of notebooks including 2 which are not in the collection, c.1990s; bundles of research notes, original sketches and posthumous photographs of Daniels' work by English county, continents, and clients, c.1990s; draft thesis on Daniels' life and work by Paul Watson; three printed books on stained glass; a folder of biographical notes and photocopies; and a set of postcards, seemingly unconnected with Daniels' work..
George Daniels received commissions for artwork from a number of stained glass manufacturers including Franz Mayer and Co. of Germany; and Clayton and Bell of England. Records of his work for these companies exists in the collection.
George Daniels (1854-1940) was a stained glass designer and church decorator. He was chief draftsman and main figure cartoonist for stained glass maker Clayton and Bell for whom he worked from 1883-1900. Other commissions came from companies including Mayer & Co. of Munich, J.F. Bentley, R.H. Courbauld, Horace Wilkinson and F.C. Eden. His work was commissioned for churches, catehrdrals, and civic buildings.
The collection was given to the NMR in two gifts by Edward and Muriel Simpson in 2000 and 2002. Mr Simpson subsequently donated a topographical index to Daniels' windows which can be cross referenced with the notebooks.
