Provenance : Henry Dalton Clifford trained as an architect in the late 1920's and early 1930's, taking his RIBA intermediate exam in 1933. Articled to John L Denman (FRIBA) of Brighton. Later worked with Joseph Emberton (1935 - 1937) and Burnet, Tait and Lorne (1937 - 1939). A testimonial from J J Tait indicates that Clifford worked on the Glasgow Empire Exhibition (See Burnet, Tait & Lorne Collection, BTL01).
After the war he started start to write and produce cartoons as well as pursuing a career in interior design. He returned to architecture in 1962 specializing in conversions and worked as an architectural historian. Later in life he ran a hotel and several junk shops in Penzance as well as published charts on herbs and spices.Throughout his career he worked as a journalist on numerous papers, journals and magazines, and was a long time contributor to Country Life magazine. Several books by him were published by Country Life including: New Houses for Moderate Means (1957) Country Life Book of Houses for Today (1963) Plan Your Own Home Decoration The collection includes correspondence with many noted architectural historians and architects such as Mark Girouard, Howard Colvin, Alec Clifton Taylor, Clive Aslet, Christopher Hussey, Oliver Hill, Hugh Casson, Roger Smithells and others.
