The collection contains photography of churches, country houses and urban buildings taken by Goodhart-Rendel, with an emphasis on those designed by nineteenth century architects such as G E Street, and buildings to his own designs. 44% of the collection shows ecclesiastical buildings, 21% domestic buildings and 17% country houses, including Hatchlands which was Goodhart-Rendel's main residence.
Sites in most English counties are represented in the collection with a bias to the south, particularly Surrey at 14% and Sussex with 12%.
In the absence of more precise documentation, the date range of the collection has been estimated to be between 1910 and 1940 on the basis of internal evidence and the period within which Goodhart-Rendel was most likely taking the photographs
H S Goodhart-Rendel CBE (1887-1959) was a former president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a member of the National Buildings Record Council of Management and important architect and architectural historian. He was a well known and popular public speaker and critic. The collection relates to Goodhart-Rendel's teaching and research activities.
The collection is comprised of 'Verascope' negative and positive stereoscopic plates annotated by subject on accompanying index cards. Other stereoscopic negatives / positives are selectively annotated by subject. The National Monuments Record received the collection via Sir George Rendel (executor) in 1960. Negatives are filed in the NMR numbered runs.
The collection was catalogued in detail between June and October 2000.
Collection includes a set of index cards giving details of Victorian church architects and church restorations in England.
