Description

The collection comprises a printed book entitled 'A History of Lichfield Cathedral' written by J B Stone. The book contains 5 black and white photographs showing early views of Lichfield Cathedral and Bishop's Palace, Staffordshire. The book was printed by Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer of London in 1870. J B Stone is the author of the book but it is unclear whether he is also the photographer of the prints included.

J B Stone (1838-1914), later better known as Sir John Benjamin Stone, the Conservative politician, was a noted photographer who founded the National Photographic Record Association (NPRA) in 1897. He is said to have been a collector of photographs from the early 1860s, later studying photography, and taking photographs himself from the early 1880s.

The photographs in the book show a distant view of the Cathedral taken 'from the Pool', its north and west doorways and reredos, and an exterior view of the Bishop's Palace.
