The collection comprises a published book entitled 'Description of the Machinery and Apparatus for a Gunpowder Factory' written by James A. C. Hay C.E. The book contains 11 black and white photographs showing machinery (not in situ) from the Derwent Foundry of Taylor and Challen, Birmingham. The book was printed by Martin Billing Son and Co. of Birmingham.

The photographs show: Charcoal grinding mill, Saltpetre and sulphur grinding apparatus, Saltpetre and sulphur sifting reel, Mixing machine, Incorporating mill, Breaking-down machine, Hydraulic pressing apparatus, Granulating machine, Dusting reels and glazing barrels, and Densimeter. There are also printed diagrams of Drying apparatus and Pellet machine.

The volume demonstrates a rare early application of industrial photography towards a theme addressed by English Heritage.

A full description by Wayne Cocroft (English Heritage) is available.
