Description

The collection contains over 10000 images and documents of synagogues and other buildings relating to the history of Jewish people in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. They derive from the establishment, administration and research of the Survey of the Jewish Built Heritage (SJBH). The SJBH had the aim of promoting protection, recording, preservation and public access to buildings of Jewish Heritage in these areas. It was mainly active from 1998-2006 but some of the records predate and postdate it.

The SJBH was carried out under the auspices of the Jewish Memorial Council, initially with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and, to a lesser degree, by English Heritage, the Royal Institute of British Architects, and private donors and foundations. In 2004 it received significant funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council via the University of Manchester.

Published works resulting from the SJBH included: 'Jewish Heritage in England: An Architectural Guide' (1st ed. 2006), 'Jewish Heritage in Britain and Ireland: An Architectural Guide' (2nd ed. 2015), 'The Synagogues of Britain and Ireland' (2011), and ‘Jewish Heritage in Gibraltar’ (2007), all by Dr Sharman Kadish.

There are access restrictions in this collection. A data protection assessment must be made by Archive staff before administration and research files are made available.

From 1999, English Heritage photographers recorded monuments and sites dating from before the Second World War, some of which were used for EH and SJBH publications. These photographs are catalogued under a separate collection with reference code EHC01/019.

A handlist is available.
