Description

The collection consists of an album containing 283 small format black and white photographic prints relating to Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical architecture. The images cover sites from across the country, from Durham to Hampshire. They include exterior shots of parish churches with Anglo-Saxon features or origins, and interior and close-up shots of Ango-Saxon architectural details. The prints have all been annotated with location information.

The album was compiled by John Emslie Sweetland Dallas, an amateur photographer and Anglo-Saxon scholar, who was born in August 1885 and died in November 1952. The prints probably date from the 1920s - 1930s, although exact dates are not known. In the early part of the 20th century Dallas served in the British Indian Army, but little else is known of his life. The album was deposited with the Archive by Miss R Davis in 1979.

A handlist is attached detailing the locations of the buildings photographed.
