Description

The collection represents the work of Sidney Owen Kenney (1930-2000), known as Owen Kenney. He worked as a legal executive at Manchester Diocesan Registry for over 40 years. Towards the end of his life he also served as a church warden at Glossop Parish Church in Derbyshire. From the early 1950s Owen Kenney was a keen amateur photographer, focussing primarily on architectural subjects. His interest in ecclesiastical architecture is heavily reflected within the collection. There are a relatively small number of photographs of country houses, archaeological sites and civic buildings. Some of his photographs have been used in church guidebooks and by Manchester Cathedral Diocese. Owen Kenney was a member of Manchester Photographic Society from 1956 until his death in 2000, serving as President and Honorary Secretary. Manchester Photographic Society ran annual exhibitions for which Owen Kenney won numerous trophies. He also exhibited at the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union. The collection is national in scope, with Greater Manchester (where Mr Kenney was raised and lived for most of his life) representing the largest single geographic concentration. Other counties covered within the collection include Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Yorkshire. There is also a sizeable group of circa 200 unidentified images. Most of the photographs show interior views. The collection includes mounted exhibition prints (circa 662), negatives (circa 1600), colour slides (circa 150) and associated photographic prints.

Archival History

Collection assembled by Mr S. Owen Kenney. Most of material comes from exhibitions put on at the Manchester Photographic Society.
