Description

A collection of 127 copy negatives and corresponding prints. The images are copies of pen and ink drawings by Kathe Strenitz, the originals of most of which are held by London Metropolitan Archives. The drawings document Kings Cross and the surrounding area, particularly focussing on the industrial landscape, and are an excellent artistic record of the area in the 1970s.

In addition to the industrial drawings, there are seaside scenes showing people at the beach, beachfront cafes, and a pier. These probably show Herne Bay in Kent. There are also four copy negatives of photographs of Kathe Strenitz and her husband.

Kathe Strenitz was a Czechoslovakian artist. Born in 1923, she came to England in 1939 as a Kindertransport refugee. She later studied drawing at Regent Street Polytechnic. She died in August 2017. Several of the industrial drawings are included in Peter Darley's book, 'The King's Cross Story: 200 Years of History in the Railway Lands'.
