Collection: Edward Charles Le Grice Collection

Description

This large collection represents the work of Edward Charles Le Grice FRPS (1888-1970), a Norwich based photographer, who was active from the 1920s to the 1960s. His photographic interests were varied, including natural history and portraiture, but he specialized in architectural subjects. In 1941 he was recruited by the National Building Record (NBR) to photograph historically significant buildings under threat from enemy action and those damaged by it. Much of his photography within this collection dates to the 1940s and early 1950s and focusses on the city of Norwich and its surrounding areas. There is a strong emphasis on ecclesiastical subjects, particularly Norwich Cathedral as well as the city’s other historic churches. There is limited coverage outside of Norfolk. The collection also includes some negatives (circa 160?) taken by another Norwich photographer, William Buston (1863-1943), a brewing company director, amateur photographer and a member of the Norwich and District Photographic Society. Following William Buston's death, Edward Le Grice recommended his work to the National Buildings Record (NBR) and acted as an envoy for the family.

The collection is believed to extend to over 20,000 negatives and over 600 photographic prints.

Archival History

Received Via : E C Le Grice, 1959 Provenance : Norwich-based professional photographer active from the 1920s - 1960s. Contributing extensively to the NBR, the majority of his work is represented in the RCHME Negatives. A small number of the negs from the collection have been given RCHME accession numbers.
