Archival History

The album was acquired as part of AQ/02/009 (Bedford Lemere) but the contents are not associated. There are 44 sepia images taken around the 1870s ie. the time of the demolition of Northumberland House (p.8 shows this and the lion surmounting it as the background to one of the Landseer lions in Trafalgar Square). Sources: George Washington Wilson (p.12, 18). The most important views (p.28-9) show interior of Covent Garden Market with porters, vegetable stalls etc., figures (copy neg. AA035342). There are several good City of London street scenes.
