Description

The collection comprises 524 black and white photographs and 132 colour transparencies of London taken by Leonard Robin Mattock (1936-1986).

The images show views of (mainly) well known events, buildings, sculpture, statues and landmarks in Greater London taken between the 1960s and the 1980s. The black and white photographs include examples of festivals, night shots, events, restoration of stonework, plaques, monuments, statues, clock towers, architectural details, signs, and social occasions such as the Changing of the Guard. There is coverage of the demolition of London Bridge, excavations on Lower Thames Street, a Hare Krishna group at Oxford Circus. The colour transaparencies include street murals in Greenwich, excavations at the Roman Dock, Remembrance Day, Eltham Palace courtyard cottages, and interior views of the Stock Exchange. Some images remain unidentified and there are some duplicate photographs.

Leonard Mattock was an amateur photograph who took the images for personal interest, and the collection was donated to the archive in 2001.

A handlist is available.
