Description

This collection represents the work of Arthur James Mason (1865-1961), a retired optician and National Buildings Record (NBR) photographer. A J Mason was born in Clerkenwell, London on the 4th November 1865 and grew up in Wandsworth. The collection includes 4500-5500 negatives dating from circa 1900-1940. The contents are primarily a record of ecclesiastical subjects. Also included are a small number of secular sites, notably university and civic buildings. Geographically, the collection covers many English counties including Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Durham, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, London, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Sussex, Worcestershire and Yorkshire. Of these, there is a bias towards counties in the south of England with sites in Surrey, Cambridgeshire, Kent and London being especially well represented.

The collection also includes a small number of negatives taken by other photographers including Walter Plomer Young (1857-1931), Ernest Godman (1876-1906) and W Bean, whose identity is unclear.
