The collection comprises 373 images of Montague Burton clothing shops, and twenty images of Woolworths, thirty images of Boots and fifty images of Marks and Spencer stores in the British Isles. The photographs were taken by circuit judge His Honour Nicholas Philpot (1944-) between about 1970 and 2010.
The majority of the stores are located in England; several photographs show locations in Wales, Scotland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Many of the stores are shown while occupied by the original businesses, though others were photographed after the stores closed and the premises are shown with modern fascia signs or updated facades.
The architectural house styles of each business is often recognisable (including Art Deco, Tudorbethan and Jacobean revival, and neo-Classicism), reflecting the work of the firms' in-house architects including A N Bromley and Michael Vyne Treleaven (Boots), Harry Wilson (Burton), J M Monro & Son, W A Lewis & Partners, and Norman Jones, Sons & Rigby (M&S). The majority of stores were designed by built in the early- and mid-20th century.
As well as showing buildings and facades, the Burton series (MBC01/03) includes details such as an example of a 'coffin' door, tiling and mosaic designs, and several decorative ventilation grilles.
Note: The totals include seventy-six digital images which are currently uncatalogued.
The collection was acquired by the Historic England Archive in 2019.
