The collection comprises 933 photographic prints and 83 negatives depicting the excavation of Lullingstone Roman Villa near Eynsford, Kent, by Colonel GW Meates in the 1950s.
Apart from details of finds and trenches there are many images showing archaeologists, visitors and associated social events as well as unusual views of the archaeological work room inside Lullingstone Castle specifically renovated for this purpose.
Photographs are occasionally accompanied by correspondence.
Professional photographers and agencies represented in the collection include: J Skeel, G W Meates, W G Davis, Fox Photos, John Topham, The Times, Keystone Press, Kent Messenger, The Observer, and the Ministry of Works. Amateur photographers include: Barbara J. Smith, C P Burnham and Pamela Irving.
A handlist is available.
The origin of the collection is unknown. It is likely that it was compiled by Colonel Meates and then transferred to English Heritage in the 1980s.
The NMR holds 2 other collections relating to Colonel Meates' work at Lullingstone: MEA01 and MEA03. The NMR also holds the Jack Skeel collection and official photography, plans and files relating to English Heritage's curatorial responsibility for Lullingstone.
