Description

A collection of circa 13,000 colour 35mm slides. They were taken by industrial archaeologist Dr Michael Harrison between circa 1980 and 2000. Dr Harrison is a former President of the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA). This large collection includes interior, exterior and detailed views of a wide variety of industrial sites, landscapes and artefacts as well as the people who worked in/with them. There is good nationwide coverage, with the West Midlands particularly well represented. Most of the UK’s significant industries are included within the collection. Some of the sites have since been demolished or refurbished and the photographs are therefore important historical records. As well as industrial sites (working and abandoned) there is also coverage of industrial and open-air museums. Amongst others, these include Blists Hill Victorian Town (part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums complex), The Black Country Living Museum and Beamish Open-Air Museum. Locomotives are also well represented. Upon receipt, the collection included a large component of material relating to sites in Wales. All Welsh material has been transferred to the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical Monuments Wales (RCAHM Wales) with all rights. Other foreign material includes sites in Scotland, Ireland and mainland Europe. Each slide is comprehensively labelled. There is also an Access Database listing the contents of the collection, including items now held in Wales. The database includes reports breaking down the contents thematically and topographically.
