Description

The collection contains 17 black and white photographic prints showing Mulberry Harbours. These harbours were prefabricated, portable harbours built by the British during the Second World War. The intention was to use the structures to enable rapid offloading of cargo onto French beaches during the Allied troops' invasion of Normandy in 1944. Two such harbours were constructed and deployed at Omaha Beach (Mulberry A), and Gold Beach, Arromanches (Mulberry B).

The prints show harbours in use and under construction. Some of the photographs were taken at Arromanches, France but the locations of other views are not known. Only one photograph is dated, October 1944. The photographs were commissioned by the War Office.
