The collection comprises a printed book entitled 'Mongst Mines and Miners or Underground Scenes by Flashlight' written by J C Burrow and William Thomas. The book contains 27 black and white photomechanically produced Woodburytype prints illustrating methods of working in mines in Cornwall. The book was published by Simpkin, Marshall, Kent and Co. Ltd of Stationers' Hall Court EC and printed by Camborne Printing and Stationery Co. Ltd of Camborne, Cornwall and Waterlow and Sons Ltd of London Wall, London in 1893.
The identity of the photographer is J C Burrow. The book is divided into: 'Part 1: An Account of the Photographic Experience by J C Burrow' and 'Part 2: A Description of the Subjects Photographed by William Thomas'.
The mines represented are: Dolcoath Mine, Cook's Kitchen Mine, East Pool Mine, and Blue Hills Mine. The images include views of men working in mines, rock specimens in Camborne Mining School Museum, and an above ground view of the mines around Carn Brea.
The collection was acquired by The English Heritage Archive in 2012.
The title page of the book describes J.C. Burrow as 'Photographer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales' and William Thomas as 'secretary to the Mining Association and Institute of Cornwall; lecturer on 'Mining and Dressing of Ores', and instructor in 'Mine Surveying' a the Camborne School of Mines etc.'
