The collection contains a folio of 10 black and white large-format photographs titled 'Manchester Ship Canal, Making of the Waterway'.
It was compiled between 1888-9 and the photographs were taken by Thomas Birtles of Warrington. The photographs have printed captions and show: 'Rock Cutting under Acton Grange Viaduct'; 'Latchford Viaduct, showing Locks in distance'; 'Letting in the Water at Ellesmere Port with E.L. Williams and other engineers'; 'Runcorn Bridge, making concrete wall'; 'Making Latchford Locks, View from Embankment'; 'Dredger at Work, Ellesmere Port'; 'Sluices at Weston, the largest in the World'; 'Pile driving, making the Gantry, looking across the Mersey to Widnes'; 'English Navvies and the Iron Horse'; and 'Walton Cutting showing piers for Swing Bridge and entrance to Warrington Docks'.
The collection was acquired by The English Heritage Archive in 2012.
