Description

Newton & Co Ltd, Scientific Instrument Makers and Ophthalmic Opticians, were also collectors of glass plate negatives. The photographs in the collection are primarily of country and town house interiors, exteriors and gardens with substantial London coverage. A letter in the collection file records that the company collected the negatives of York & Son, London; Wilson Bros. Aberdeen; Messrs. Fincham, Dulwich; Frederick Hollyer, London; and Horatio Nelson King, London. However, a number of the images, especially those showing country houses, may have been taken by Horatio Nelson King (1828-1905), architectural photographer to Queen Victoria, whose initials are printed on negatives of Penshurst Place, Kent. This collection is partially catalogued.
