Description

The collection comprises slides, photographic prints, and church guidebooks, created and compiled by Charles and Harriet Nicewonger.

Charles Robert and Harriet Nicewonger, of Berkeley, California, made a series of trips to the United Kingdom between the 1950s and the 1970s. During these trips they visited cathedrals, churches, and country houses, photographing views of interest to them. They developed a particular interest in English church architecture and decoration, specifically carvings depicting musical instruments and players, and approximately 50-75% of the collection focuses on this subject. Images taken by Charles Nicewonger appear in the publication ‘Minstrels and Angels: Carving of Musicians in Medieval English Churches’, by Jeremy Montagu (Berkeley: California, 1988). A copy of this publication is included in the collection.

Alongside the slides and photographic prints, there are a series of guidebooks annotated by Harriet Nicewonger.

Archival History

The collection was donated by Jeremy Montagu in November 2001 on behalf of the Nicewonger Estate.
