Description

A collection of archive relating to an excavation undertaken, by Rahtz in 1957, to test the continuity of the curtain wall around the outer bailey at Old Sarum and to locate a tunnel seen there in 1795. Evidence of Iron Age and Roman occupation was unearthed at the site. The work was funded by the Ancient Monuments Division of the MoW.

The collection consists of reports, drawings and a large number of administrative records relating to the excavations. To make the archive more accessible these records have been broken down into various sub files, each catalogued at the sub file level but only the reports and drawings were catalogued individually.

The four sub-files are: RAH02/01 contains various versions of the excavation reports and some excavation drawings, these have been catalogued individually.

RAH02/02 contains correspondence and records relating to the commissioning and funding of the excavations and is catalogued to Sub File level only RAH02/03 contains correspondence and administrative records relating to the publication of the reports and is catalogued to Sub File level only RAH02/04 contains correspondence and records relating to two press articles about the excavations, one of which became controversial. This is also catalogued to Sub File level only.

Although the authors of the published report were given as Rahtz and Musty the archive makes clear Musty was included as a courtesy only. Rahtz was solely responsible for the excavations and report
