Description

The collection comprises two albums containing about 470 small format monochrome photographic prints, ticket stubs, correspondence and other ephemera relating to the British Empire Exhibition, Wembley compiled by Robert J Wigelsworth of Cheadle Hulme in 1924 and 1925. Images include views of the various pavilions and events at the exhibition. Some images were taken at night.

Wigelsworth compiled the photographs in this album in response to an article that appeared in the Daily Dispatch, which invited visitors to the Exhibition to compile pictorial reminders of the event. Formal permission was required to photograph at the site. A separate article records that Wigelsworth spent nearly 130 hours at the Exhibition, travelling over 380 miles on foot.

Archival History

The collection was acquired by The English Heritage Archive in 2014.
