Andrew Downing Saunders (1931-2009) was appointed Inspector of Ancient Monuments in 1954. He was created Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments in 1973, and remained in this role until his retirement. In his spare time he was a keen archaeologist, and authored several journal articles on archaeological digs he had taken part in. He was also a recognised expert on artillery defences and forts from the 14th century onwards.
The collection, the result of Saunders' work, comprises the following series':
SAU01/01 - Series of ten notebooks, 1956-1971, containing sketches, plans and notes of sites investigated by Saunders during his role of Inspector of Ancient Monuments. Also several published guidebooks.
SAU01/02 - Measured drawing of the 1955 excavation at St Michael's School, St Albans.
SAU01/03 - Photographic prints of St Augustine's College, Dover, 1955-58.
SAU01/04 - Committee Files, 1970s/1980s.
SAU01/05 - Historic Wrecks Committee Files, 1970s/1980s (three boxes).
SAU01/06 - Files relating to specific building types including railways and canals.
SAU01/07 - Stonehenge Working Party Files.
SAU01/08 - Miscellaneous files including Housing and Planning Bill 1986.
SAU01/09 - Files relating to archaeological sites.
SAU01/10 - Files on the Tower of London.
SAU01/11 - Miscellaneous files on archaeological sites including Hadrian's Wall.
SAU01/12 - Photographs taken by or compiled by Andrew Saunders.
Received Via : Transferred to the archive by Colin Brodie.
Provenance : Former Inspector of Ancient Monuments for the MPBW/MOW.Received from the Assistant Secretary of the Royal Archaeological Institute on 12/10/1998.
