Description

The collection comprises a photograph album containing about 475 images primarily showing furniture. The album has a green hardback cover embossed with 'Sutton Courtenay' in gold but obscured with a printed address label of Sindlay Limited, Antiques, Decorations, 70 Wigmore Street, London W.1. The label shows that the album was sent from Sindlay Ltd to E.M. Reece of 2/73 Cornwall Gardens, London SW7. The inside of the cover also bears E.M. Reece's address and a photograph of Lympne Castle, Kent captioned with Mrs... [Francis] Tennant, 1907-1908.

There are photographs, cuttings and photomechanical prints in the album which appears to have been used as a scrapbook. Furniture featured includes beds, cabinets, tables, chairs, tapestries, fireplaces, benches, doors, and sideboards. There are five large format photographs showing the banqueting hall at The Manor House, Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire between 1900 and 1908 (3 images), and the interior of The Norman Hall, Sutton Courtenay between 1901 and 1906 (2 images). There are also images of furniture in it at or once at Beaudesert, Staffordshire and Lympne Castle, Kent.

The album appears to have been used as a scrapbook, by Sindlay Limited or E.M. Reece, as a record of furniture sold or as a reference resource for interpreting furniture offered. The pencil annotations suggest that Sindlay or Reece were involved in redecorating The Norman Hall, Sutton Courtenay and it is possible that this work was part of a wider portfolio of work undertaken for the Tennant family by Sindlay or Reece as most of the houses represented are connected to the family in some way.

Harry and Nora Lindsay were given The Manor House, Sutton Courtenay contemporaneously with this album. They later purchased The Norman Hall. Hary was an antique dealer and Nora was a garden designer. It is likely that Sindlay was Harry’s company, the name being an anagram of Lindsay. He often helped country house owners to furnish their homes or to sell furniture.
